Welcome
French mélodie is dominated by musical giants: Fauré, Debussy and Ravel. Later comes Poulenc; later still, Messiaen. The purpose of tonight's entertainment is to avoid all these splendid gentlemen and explore some of the hinterland instead. We reach as far back as Gounod, and trace a line through César Franck and his pupils. Chausson and Duparc led tragic lives but left behind treasures. Emmanuel Chabrier brings wit and his uniquely sophisticated charm. We have aimed to include both some iconic masterpieces and other neglected jewels. Perhaps the word is mélange?
– Iain Burnside
